Jesus is the Way

by Francine Caram

Jesus Christ declared “I AM the Way,” but clearly, not everyone believes Him. What are we all afraid of? The evidence for Jesus and His great works are well documented both in and out of the Bible. The evidence for His crucifixion on the cross, the empty tomb three days later, and His appearances to over 500 eye-witnesses after his resurrection is very compelling. Jesus fulfilled over 300 messianic prophecies written in the Old Testament scriptures. With the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the reliability of the Septuagint version of the Old Testament, both of which have been proven to exist prior to the time Jesus walked on the earth, you can be assured that there prophecies were not “conspired” after-the-fact. They were truly fulfilled by the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Actually, if you look at the polls, most people aren’t afraid of Jesus at all. They’re afraid of Christians. Look at the way many Christians act, and who can deny this fear; arcane rituals, flamboyant preachers, money, power, hypocrisy. Do these present a real picture of who Jesus Is, and who He wants us to be? No. However, Jesus did not ask us to follow men and religion. He asked us to follow Him.

Jesus Christ said that He was the only way. Jesus is unique. He was either telling the truth. He was crazy, or He was a liar. But since everyone agrees that Jesus was a “good man”, how then could He be both good and crazy, or good and a liar? There is only one logically consistent alternative. He must have been telling the truth. Jesus is who He said He was – He is the only way to God!

Road Signs

It is not easy to reach the Kingdom of the Father. Everyone has that desire to make it his final destination, where all sorrow is gone, all bitterness forgotten, all doubts erased, all the heartaches turned to submission and acceptance, all hate turned to love. No matter as to who we are and what we are, no matter what our Creed is, eternal life with the Father is everyone’s objective.

I never believe in people who say that they do not believe in God. It is merely are exhibition of pride and a borrowed expression of philosophy. This is usually uttered by some philosophers who are in the peak of health but who change their tune when they feel that the final hour is near.

The journey to our Father’s Home however, is long and dangerous. There pitfalls on the road itself, or by the edges. Chasms exist in unexpected places. They are there to obstruct or to create confusion. However, there are road signs which are found in strategic places, and all we need is faith, faith in the Father’s love and mercy in order to see them. This is where we need the strong Hand of the Father; the Heart of Jesus of Divine Mercy; the unfaltering brilliance of the light of the Holy Spirit; and the motherly care of Mama Mary to give us self-confidence and courage.

These are some of the signs:

1) Force is a wrong weapon. Prayer is the sharpest.
2) 2) Human strength alone is no much for the interceptions. Divine Will is the best.
3) Do something. Use your eyes, your hands, your feet, move and live. Stay indifferent and perish.
4) Move fast; or sink in the mud of destructive values.
5) Listen to the bugle. Wake up from your lethargy. It’s time to move – now!
6) Leave your Godless ways. Dwell under the canopy of God’s love. Believe. Practice, and live!

Let this be an imposed task on each of us:
Wipe the dirt of sin as we meditate during this Lenten season. Paint a picture of peace, harmony, decency and love, on the canvas of your heart and feel the joy of transfiguration as the Light of God’s blessing penetrate your veins.

Santa Francesca Romana

Marso 9, 1440

Sa pahanugot sadto sang iya bana nagpaidalom sia sa kabuhi sang pagpangamuyo (life of contemplation). May ara sia nga bugay (gifts) nga makakita sang mga langitnon nga mga personas, makahimo man sia sing milagro, makakita sang iya angel nga manugbantay, may panan-awan (vision) sia sang purgatorio kag impyerno, kag sia man ang nagtagna nga matapos gid ang bangigay sang simbahan (Western Schism). Mahibal-an man niya ang sekreto sang konsensiya sang tao kag iya mabatyagan kon may ara nga plano ang yawa sa sulod sang iya konsensiya. Nakilal-an sia sang tanan sang iya pagka mapainubuson kag wala huyog sa kalibutanon nga butang.

Napatay sang anyo 1440. Subong ginatawag na ining kongregasyon niya nga Oblates of Saint Frances of Rome.

Amen.

12. Ma. Ana Gordon, Member – Legion of Mary
Lent is a time to reassess ourselves and see how far we have gone in our walk with the Lord. Our life should be one of serving and of loving Him and our fellow men. Repentance and faith should be all-around - throughout the year – not just during Lent.

During Holy Week, we keep still at home and meditate. We later on join in the Holy Week activities that include the Way of the Cross, the visiting of seven churches, and the veneration and kissing of the Cross. Lent is a time to set for ourselves a new way of thinking, in relation to our life with the Lord. Lent is also a time for family reunions.
14. Ernesto A. Abonador, Jr., Civil Engineer/ Supervises the on-site restoration and reconstruction of Jaro Cathedral for Project 20/11. Has previously also supervised the restoration and construction work on the offices of Chancery, Matrimonial Tribunal, and the Office of Oeconomus at the Jaro Archbishop’s Residence
A renewal of faith…a reminder for us of the Passion of Christ…we need to stay away from sin because of this Passion and Love of Jesus for us. During Holy Week, our family contemplates together on the Via Crucis. We also visit the different “capillas” or stations of the Cross in our vicinity.
15, Glenn M. Ticzon, Office of the Jaro Archdiocesan Pastoral Secretariat, Archbishop’s Residence
It is that period of time when we pause and reflect on the redemptive power of the death of Jesus Christ and what this means to us. We reconcile with God and make reparation for our sins. It is more of a self-introspection.
16. Sr. Susan M. Cueco, 43, Carmelite Sisters of Our Lady/ Sr. Susan serves as Secretary to His Grace, Most Reverend Angel N. Lagdameo, Archbishop of Jaro
Lent is when we celebrate Christ’s Passion and death. These are days of the Lord where we resolve to be closer to God and to be more committed to our purification.
17. Jose Victor O. Velez, Executive Assistant - Project 20/11
Lent is a slowing-down of the many “rushes” in life.
18. Blas Oscar Ray S. Cerdeña, Teller- Development Bank of the Philippines- Jaro Branch
The season of Lent makes us reflect on the Seven Last Words of Jesus Christ, giving emphasis on His sacrifices since it is the reason why we are saved from our sins, through His dying on the Cross and His Resurrection. I am going to spend Holy Week at home and attend the procession. It has always been a habit to spend the rest of the week listening to the radio and watching TV for the Seven Last Words. We also arrange our “caro” for Our Lady of Sorrows, for the procession, this on our third year at M.H. del Pilar.

What is the significance of the transfiguration of Jesus Christ?

"After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There He was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, 'Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters - one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.' (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.) Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: 'This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!' Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead" (Mark 9:2-9).

The account in the transfiguration of Jesus Christ tells us that the three: Peter, James and John were witness of Jesus, Who He claimed to be (Mark 9:2-9; Matthew 17:1-3; Matthew 17:1-3). For the three disciples stood as human witnesses to the glory that was Christ's. There were also three heavenly witnesses, Moses, Elijah, and the voice of God from heaven.
The word "transfigured" is a Greek word "metamorpho" which means to transform, literally or figuratively to metamorphose, or to change, that is, to change into another form or to change the outside to match the inside. The prefix "meta" means to change and the "morphe" means form. In the case of the transfiguration of Jesus Christ it means to match the outside with the reality of the inside. To change the outward so that it matches the inward reality. Jesus' divine nature was "veiled" (Hebrews 10:20) in human form and the transfiguration was a glimpse of that glory
Therefore, the transfiguration of Jesus Christ was a unique display of His divine character and a glimpse of the glory, which Jesus had before He came to earth in human form. This truth is emphasized for us in a passage in the Apostle Paul's letter to Phillippi. "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form (morphe) of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form (morphe) of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:5-11).

The Son of God came to earth in the form of a man to be the true servant of God and to gift mankind with the greatest gift ever given, eternal life. The transfiguration of Jesus Christ was a visible sign in the presence of reliable witnesses of the reality of the power of God and the glory, which is Christ Jesus.

We have all sinned and deserve God's judgment. God, the Father loves us so much, sent His only Son to save us. Jesus, the Creator and eternal Son of God, loves us so much that He died for our sins, taking the punishment that we deserve, was buried, and rose from the dead according to the Scripture.
Believe and trust, thank God, the Father, receive Jesus as your Savior, ask enlightenment and strength from the Holy Spirit and declare, “Jesus, my Lord and my God!”

Making the Most of Human Power The Goodness and Greatness of Numbers

Filipinos are known to take advantage of opportunity. I think that’s more positive than negative as history proves it so. As a response to that dire need for “workers” abroad, especially of those developed countries who have more slackers willing to work the “easier, less demanding jobs,” many Filipinos, out of their needs, too, got equipped and head for “greener pastures” as the cliché goes. The government, more over, got the urge of reinforcing the demand through the Administrative Order No. 247, issued on December 4, 2008, stressing that “the challenging times require out-of-the-box, not-business-as-usual, solutions.”

Fr. Edwin Corros, executive secretary of the Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care for Migrant and Itinerant People, said he wanted to know how the OFWs and their families can gain from the programs the government claimed it prepared for them, this being A.O. 247, which mandates POEA to have a paradigm shift from regulations to full-blast marketing development efforts, exploration of frontier placements to, as termed in the document, “Code Green” countries. Criticizing the “stimulus package, he lamented that the government, in this effort, is even promoting migration instead of creating job at home, saying that the government should not depend on labor exports to support the economy. “This is not the right way to develop our country,” Corros said.

Furthermore, Dr. Amelou Benitez-Reyes, President of the Philippine Women’s University, confirmed on that same gathering the reports of overseas Filipino workers’ concerns about losing their high-paying jobs. With this, she called on the government and various organizations to empower women for them to become productive members of society. “China and India would not have prospered without able support of their women,” she said, underscoring the need for women to consider micro-financing and self-help programs. Adding to that, she said that the government should not only be concerned about the plight of overseas workers but be aware of Filipinos who cannot find work in the Philippines.

As I reflect on these concerns, it poses three facts. One, that the Philippines is affected by the global economic crisis; two, that the Philippines, as advanced by the pessimistic politicians, is overpopulated can supply greatly the demand for “workers” all over the world; and third, that this scenario proves the point that the problem is not overpopulation but population management to which many of our politicians ignore as the powerful and most sustainable alternative to the imprudent and impulsive, immoral, malicious suggestions they have brought forth to the public to believe.

If I would have a voice, I’d say, we take control of the opportunity with the great resources we have --- first and foremost, the greatness of our being a Filipino, be it in the country or abroad. We have to shine like beacons in this dark times making the most of human power God has given us. Let us not be afraid of numbers but let us make use of the goodness and greatness of numbers.
Joseph Sylvester E. Pampliega

STEREOTYPES

There’s no business like show business. It has always been a struggle between sincerity and hypocrisy everytime I would watch actors and actresses being interviewed on the National Television, explaining their sides whenever they are involved in a particular issue. I must admit that there have been instances where I’d like to give in to their endless swear-it-all, and choose somebody from the opposing parties whom I can place my bet based on his or her credibility factor, with all those crocodile tears and whining just to get the attention and support of the televiewers. Like many other Filipinos, I also caught myself feasting on the daily gabfests seen on the boob tube.
Lately, one interesting “war of the nerves” that really trapped my attention was the rift between Boy Abunda and Dr. Vicky Belo. In an interview, the doctor of the stars said, “And I’d like to say, if you want to look like Boy Abunda, then go to Calayan. But if you want to look like Dingdong Dantes and Piolo Pascual, come to Belo.” It was meant to be a joke but when taken personally, it was a below the belt comment that was rather insulting on the part of the person she was referring to. Of course, the affronted Abunda retaliated with a compelling remark: “Matagal na panahon kaming nagsama ni Vicki. And Vicki, if you’re watching, alam mo na kahit kailan, kahit kailan, hindi ako namuhunan sa gandang panlabas. Alam mo, namuhunan ako sa lakas ng loob, sipag, tiyaga, at dasal. At Vicki, wala akong ilusyong maganda ako, wala akong ilusyon. Pero wala rin sinumang may karapatang manlait sa aking pagkatao.”
Now I see eyes rolling. Perhaps, you have also expressed your views on this matter and it is obvious that Boy Abunda got all the sympathy of the infuriated Filipinos, who have this penchant to side with those who are maligned and offended. We are so into this culture of the oppressed that we often hate those people, who inflict harm using sarcasm, degrading the very dignity of the human being by their slanderous verbal expressions and malevolent actions. But my point here is not so much on the fact that we are truly compassionate and patronizing people in this seemingly apathetic world, but on the sad reality of STEREOTYPING. This phenomenon is growing in the various parts of the world and it holds the principle that there’s no assurance in getting all the respect you ever wanted in life even if you are brilliant, righteous, and of good standing, for this kind of mindset will forever tarnish the ego of those who are struggling to find their place in the society. Stereotypes are nothing but prejudices based on external perceptions dictated by one’s culture, beliefs, traditions, languages and most importantly, media. It is quite sad to note that in stereotyping, we tend to equate the person’s worth in terms of preference and likeability, of how he or she would present himself or herself before the scrutinizing public. We have focused so much on aesthetics that we tend to forget the real and genuine measure of a man---the HEART. Thabo Mbeki, the former President of South Africa was recently quoted by British newspapers, as having lamented the stereotyping of blacks that he alleged was prevalent among the white citizens. According to Pres. Mbeki, whites view blacks as lazy, dumb and of a criminal disposition. He objected strongly to these stereotypes as unfair and not a true reflection of reality. But this is just one of the many mortifying attempts of stereotyping that is so prevalent even in the most progressive nations. If this will continue to happen in our society, our senses will forever be blinded by our own biases and discrimination. Time will come that what we see in front of the mirror, despite all the desirability and magnificence, could no longer contain the lies and insecurities inside our hearts. In the end, all knows a masquerade ball, where the attendees wear masks made of shams, in a great revelry of deception, propaganda and falsehood.
In the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ, the voice of God was heard from the clouds, saying, “This is my beloved Son, listen to him”. I believe that being adopted sons and daughters of God, we are also given the same assurance, and that we too deserved to be called, “beloved” because we are created in God’s image and likeness. Stereotyping is the exact anti-thesis of this enduring truth because it leads us to inequality and division rather than fellowship and communion.
Last night, I was able to watch the elimination of American Idol Season Eight. Alexander Wagner Truman, one of the aspiring hopefuls who belted his heart out before the judges, was asked by Ryan Seacrest on how he was able to manage the spiteful comments of Simon Cowell (who have been sneering at him since day one of his auditions, saying that he looks more like a cocker spaniel, that he has no personality and voice, that he can only be rated up to the scale of three, etc.) after his performance, telling him that he growled ridiculously and his attempt to kick the microphone was utterly stupid. But the young geek, unfazed by the harsh criticisms, won the hearts of the viewing public by saying that he only wanted to show people who he really is and he would rather lose the chance being himself than win it being somebody else. He didn’t make it to the top twelve but I’m pretty sure he will go home with much confidence in himself. For me it is an honest declaration of one’s desire not to be stereotyped.
It is only through the heart that one can see rightly. To hell with the stereotypes.

God’s Mystery vs. Man’s Misery Population Mumbo-Jumbo

by Joseph Sylvester E. Pampliega

I’d like to begin this article of mine with a re-affirmed faith that “God works the mysterious of ways.” Somehow, man manages to imply, forecast or predict what will happen in the future, with the gift of a critical eye – through natural and social sciences – with what the present shows; but we can stand still at times and be amazed how God works “to order things” according to his Divine plan.

In times when people go frantic to lower population because a boom in the population would also mean more problems as implied in the equation “unlimited wants vs. limited resources,” reflecting the picture of depletion in natural resources, deforestation in order to convert forest and agricultural lands to commercial or housing lands; increase in population be it in air, water, soil (even noise pollution), all kinds of new diseases, global warming, even more wars over who takes control of these “limited resources.” It’s a picture of distress! Because of these, the advocacies to control population even to the morbid of means like abortion to genocide are somehow an option many pessimistic ones would tend to choose. The Philippines, for one as many of her pessimistic politicians work out the enactment of Reproductive Health and Population Development Act of 2008,” is not exempted.

But Fr. John Flynn, LC, in his news article entitled, “Boom and Bust: Aging’s Impact on Economy,” (full text: http://www.zenit.org/article-25237?I=english) presented another scenario, which proves two things; one, that desperate and pessimistic policies and programs of government institutions to control population – in the past - has in fact brought about more than a “systemic” problem in our existence as experienced now by many developed countries; and two, that controlling population by all means is more of a danger rather than a solution to the many problems we have now. In the past, economics caused advocacies to control population; now, it’s Mother Earth saying that we’re too many already and she cannot support us anymore! --- and so we are all the more alarmed, just as I stated Larry L. Rasmussen’s words in my last article, we have “no exit” to all the “consequences” of our doings. (I may have been pessimistic, too.)

Now, with Fr. Flynn’s article, optimism sprouted back to my senses --- God knows how to spite our wrongdoings. By the very fact that we have controlled our population before, and has developed everything that is within our means – from science and technology to economics, God says, “Now, what’s next after you old people? You killed your young ones.”

Fr. Flynn said that “the clamor of [green] activists tends to receive widespread media attention, while a more worrying situation --- that of an aging population due to lack of children --- often goes without attention. Following drastic falls in fertility in past decades, many countries face enormous economic problems due to a higher proportion of elderly people in the population.” As George Magnus, author of “The Age of Aging: How Demographics are Changing Global Economy and Our World,” adds, “By 2050 there will be almost 2 billion people over 60, around 22% of the forecasted total world population, a major change compared to this group’s current share of 10%. The shift in age structure will bring with it new economic, social and political issues…As for the over-80, they are expected to increase from the current number of 88 million, to over 400 million by 2050.”

Because of this, “An aging population means there will be less people working to support those who are retired. The working-age population, from 15-64, will grow, but only slowly…” To remedy the situation, several suggestions were stated like raising retirement age, encourage more women to the workforce, immigration (Filipinos have sought for the opportunity way back in the 60s, how much more now?). Realities were also presented which, in effect, may lag the remedies. “Younger people are delaying their entry into work…In part this is due to increasing numbers undertaking university studies (Come to think of it, it takes more or less 20 years to complete the required “education,” which is too long!), but many young people are also taking breaks before entering the workforce (maybe stressed by the demands of “being a student”) and living at home with their parents (bumming around for awhile).”

Magnus continues, “An older population means much higher health care cost and increased welfare spending. But with fewer taxpayers supporting government finances, funding this expenditure will be a real problem…Moreover…many people do not do enough to save for retirement…many people simply assume they will receive health coverage and a pension from their company and have only negligible savings.” Adverse economic conditions, he said, left many to either “undersave” or “overconsume.”

The article ends, “With aging set to bring about drastic demographic change in coming decades, the future prospects for many people are looking worrying.”

As I read through the article several times, I can’t help that surge of “Te, RH-bill, RH-bill pa?! Control of population pa?!!” at the back of my mind. God works the mysterious of ways, he may have known that population will boom “in his time;” granted us all the abilities, the talents, the capacity, the inexhaustible curiosity to discover and to invent all things, “great and small;” but he knows that, just as he allowed the “happy fault” of Adam and Eve that has granted us our “free choice,” now he is making us choose – “life or death? --- It’s up to you.”
